Malaysian lawmaker proposes 100 strokes of cane as punishment for out-of-wedlock pregnancies

Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad (PAS-Pasir Puteh), who noted that caning was not included for zina (illicit sex), said it should be implemented to protect “innocent babies” from unlawful unions. “Does this mean that it is time for caning to be included under the proposed amendments to Act 355?” Nik Mazian was quoted as saying by The Star. Oil marketer jailed 10 years, to refund N963m subsidy loot

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Thursday convicted an oil marketer, Rowaye Jubril, and his company, Brila Energy Limited, of a fuel subsidy scam of N963.7m. Justice Lateefa Okunnu, in a judgment on Thursday, sentenced Jubril to a jail term of 10 years for the fraud. She said the jail term would commence from Thursday. The judge also ordered the convicts to make restitution to the Federal Government by refunding the N963.7m, which they fraudulently obtained as subsidy on the false claim that they imported 13,500 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit into the country. The convicts had fraudulently obtained the money under the Federal Government’s Petroleum Support Fund between October 2010 and May 2012. After uncovering the fraud, the EFCC dragged the oil marketer and his company to court on November 2012 and arraigned them on 13 counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and use of false documents. Aero Contractors Sacks 900 Workers

Aero Contractors Airline , which is under the management of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), has sacked about 900 workers representing 60 per cent. The Vanguard reports letters of redundancy were issued to the affected employees during the week. but the workers would be paid their pension and gratuity. Aero as at last September had about 1,500 workers on its payroll before it suspended flights. AMCON had taken it over in 2013. THE Nigerian Communications Commission , NCC , has said Nigerians spent N 3 . 66 trillion on telecommunications services in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission , Prof . Umar Dambatta , dropped the hint at the flag- off of the NCC Year of Consumer at the Commission ’ s headquarters in Abuja . According to him, Nigerian subscribers spent $ 5 .6 billion in 2015 and $ 6 .6 billion in 2016, amounting to $ 12 . 2 billion (N 3 .6 trn ) on telecommunications services at an average exchange rate of N 300 . The Bauchi state government on Monday ordered the immediate closure of a secondary school in the state capital where students conducted illegal wedding ceremonies among themselves. It was reported that a male student at the Sa’adu Zungur Model Primary and Secondary School paid N500 as dowry to 'wed' a female student, while their classmates contributed for snacks needed at the ceremony. After teachers heard about the illegal event between the SS II students they immediately reported the incident. According to a statement issued by CSP Jimoh Moshood, the force spokesman, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has approved the promotion of 28, 627 junior officers to their next rank. The mass promotion was part of ongoing efforts by the police chief to boost the morale of the personnel towards effective and efficient service delivery. Moshood said the promotion was based on merit, seniority, commitment and dedication to duty. The promotion saw 7,628 Sergeants becoming Inspectors while 20,667 Corporals are now sergeants. Three hundred and thirty two  Constables were also promoted to the post of Corporal.
